William Jewell university alumnus Pierre Jallow spent most of his career in Finland. In 2014/15 season the Gambian played 3 games for Bisons in VTB League, averaging 3.0 points, 6.3 rebounds per game. Every summer, Jallow organizes a basketball camp for children of Gambia.

Also there was Ousman Krubally, an American with Gambian passport. In 2016/17 he played for Astana. In 27 games, Krubally averaged 12.5 points and 7.6 rebounds.

The main feature of the Gambian league of 9 teams is that they compete at the open court.

That’s what YMCA’s (countrie’s top team) starting five looks like. This is the view of the official’s table and the scoreboard.

3×3 basketball is very popular in Gambia. Local men’s and women’s team play in FIBA events on a regular basis.

 

 

Interesting fact

The most famous basketball player with Gambian origins is Oklahoma’s and Germany national guard Dennis Schroder. His mother grew up in Gambia.

Within 48 years of history, Gambian national team have played at Afrobasket only once. In 1978, they were among 10 Afrobasket competitors and took the 9th place losing all 4 group stage games.

The last time Gambia participated in Afrobasket qualification was in 2005.

As of today, Gambia national team is not among 168 teams of FIBA rating.

17-year-old Yusupha Konteh plays for Italian Aurora, two centers (both born in 2000) Alasan Mbowe (Zamora) and Nuha Sanya (Tenerife) play in Spain, and 18-year-old Ousainu Sarr is a big man for Serbian Mladost.

The guards Hassan Manyang and Kemo Sonko play for Canadian universities.
