VTB United League President Sergei Kushchenko shared his expectations ahead of the Super Cup, set for September 17–20 in Moscow:
— This is the sixth edition of the VTB United League Super Cup, and the tournament keeps gaining momentum year after year — more and more fans and experts are taking notice, including beyond Russia’s borders. Last year we staged the Super Cup in Belgrade, and everyone praised the high level of both the basketball and the organization.
The tournament’s international profile deserves special mention. Anadolu Efes coming to town is a major moment for all of Russian basketball. A current EuroLeague participant and two-time EuroLeague champion, Efes is an elite-caliber opponent — the kind of test that will show our teams exactly where they stand.
Fittingly, Efes becomes the third Turkish club in Super Cup history, following Fenerbahce and Besiktas. That speaks to the trust our tournament has earned and confirms that the VTB United League Super Cup has firmly established itself on the international calendar.
We’re also delighted to welcome Igokea of Republika Srpska back to Russia — a team with real character and traditions of its own. At last season’s Winline Basket Cup, Igokea proved to be a genuinely tough out.
Rounding out the field are the four best clubs of the VTB United League — CSKA, UNICS, Lokomotiv Kuban and Zenit — making this one of the strongest Super Cup lineups in history. Four days of action, six teams, a first-class arena — everything is in place to give fans a true basketball celebration before the season even begins. See you September 17–20 at VTB Arena!
